Title
Computer modeling of plaque formation and development as well as vessel wall rupture prediction in the aorta and arteries
Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is a primary source of morbidity and mortality in the Europe and the western world. Fundamental to understanding the mechanisms of this disease, and for formulating strategies for treatment, is the ability to simulate both the normal cardiovascular system as well as the system in disease. Computer methods and three-dimensional image techniques are very important for quatification of cardiovascular mechanics in patient-specific anatomical and physiological model as well as disease model.
In this project a specific software to study interventions for abdominal aortic aneurysm, a potentially deadly condition in which the abdominal aorta weakens, bulges, and might eventually rupture will be developed. Also a specific software for blood flow simulation through the coronary and carotid artery will be developed with unique atherosclerotic computer model of plaque formation and development. The verification and validation of computer atherosclerotic model will be done with experimental in-vivo and in-vitro on the animal model and clinical practice. In order to support all simulations and three-dimensional medical image reconstruction and visualisation procedures the high-performance computer equipment (120,000 nodes in parallel) will be provided through this project.
At present, medical device manufacturers have little information on the anatomic variations, the arterial deformation. 妥he biomechanical forces in the vascular system are needed for the design of stents for occlusive disease and stent grafts to isolate aneurysms. In this project the lifecycle & fatigue testing for various loading modes medical devices in cardiovascular system which may be exposed will be provided with specific equipment for this project.

Title
Clinical Challenges for IVUS - An Engineer*s Perspective
Abstract
The role of IVUS in solving clinical problems in a Catheterization Lab
