Advances in Medical Ultrasound

Abstract:

Ultrasound in medicine has been in use for over a half century now. Although first primitive systems were not very practical to use, the advances in microelectronic technology enabled fast, low cost phased array ultrasound imaging. Although the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound images is inferior to other imaging modalities like MRI and CT, ultrasound imaging has by far been the most frequently used clinical imaging technique. And, there are simple reasons for that: US systems are low cost (such that independent practitioners
can afford them) and fast (up to 100 fps for cardiac use), and ultrasound is harmless at the doses used for imaging (US radiation is non-ionizing). Against all these advantages, US imaging has been losing its ground against MR and CT simply because of the lack of diagnostic value. However, recent advances in medical ultrasound (both in imaging and therapeutics) will make sure that US imaging and therapeutics has a permanent place among medical technologies. This talk, after giving a brief introduction on ultrasound imaging basics, will introduce some of these advances and their potential applications.

Short Bio: A Sanli Ergun (1969) completed his BS, MS and PhD at Bilkent University in 1991, 1994, and 1999, respectively, all in electrical and electronics engineering. He, then, joined E.L. Ginzton Laboratory in Stanford University as a post-doc and became a research associate in 2000. His major research work at Stanford University was on developing MEMS-based technologies for ultrasound transducers. In 2006, he joined Siemens Corporate Research where he worked on advanced ultrasound probes and their applications. In 2008, Dr. Ergun returned back to Turkey to become an assistant professor at TOBB - University of Economy and Technology.
