Prof. Dr. Nassir Navab of TUM will talk about Advance Imaging and Visualization for Computer Assisted Interventions, which is currently one of the state-of-the art technologies in computational medical imaging field. In addition, two researchers from his group Dr. Groher and Darko Zikic will give lectures.

motivation, state-of-art and future challenges

Abstract
In this talk, I will focus on the problem of design and development of advance imaging and visualization solutions for computer assisted interventions. One major scientific challenge is the recovery and modeling of surgical workflow. The second one is the analysis of large amount of heterogeneous data and their intelligent real-time fusion. The third one is the advanced visualization of such data during focused, high-intensity surgical procedures. In particular, I review the state of art in Medical Augmented Reality, and discuss challenges faced by scientific community in the upcoming years. Throughout this presentation, I use clinical applications and our recent results, obtained in our real-world laboratories within several clinics in Munich, to demonstrate the issues and to provide exemplary paths towards possible solutions. Such examples include real-time Ultrasound/CT registration, Free-Hand SPECT reconstruction, Camera-Augmented Mobile C-arm (CAMC) and HMD based AR for intra-operative visualization and medical training.

Bio-Sketch: Nassir Navab is a full professor and director of the institute for Computer Aided Medical Procedures (CAMP: http://campar.in.tum.de) at Technical University of Munich (TUM) with a secondary faculty appointment at its Medical School. In 2001, while acting as distinguished member of technical staff at Siemens Corporate Research (SCR) in Princeton, he received the prestigious Siemens Inventor of the Year Award for the body of his work in interventional imaging. He had received his PhD from INRIA and University of Paris XI in France and enjoyed two years postdoctoral fellowship at MIT Media Laboratory before joining SCR in 1994. In November 2006, he was elected as a member of board of directors of MICCAI society. He has been serving on the Steering Committee of the IEEE Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality since 2001. He is the author of hundreds of peer reviewed scientific papers and over 40 US and international patents. He is currently serving as Program Chair for MICCAI 2010 and as Area Chair for ECCV and ACCV 2010. He is on the editorial board of IEEE TMI, MedIA and Medical Physics. He is proud of his PhD students, who have received many prestigious awards including MICCAI young investigator awards in 2007 and in 2009, best paper awards at ISMAR 2005, VOEC-ICCV 2009, and IPMI Erbsmann award in 2007.

Medical Image Analysis for Vascular Structures:

Novel Navigation Techniques for Abdominal Catheterizations (09:40-10:30)

Abstract: In modern hospitals, abdominal pathologies are often accessed by advancing a catheter through the human vessel system. A navigation based on X-ray fluoroscopy is common in such scenarios, which allows the treatment to be minimally-invasive. However, due to ambiguities in the projective images, patient motion, and radio transparency of vascular structures, this navigation is not optimal and intervention times, X-ray exposure to patient and physician, as well as the amount of administered contrast agent may increase. In this talk, I will address different issues to bring the navigation process from 2D to 3D in a monocular interventional scenario. This includes the processing of medical imagery to extract vessel structures, a 2D-3D pose estimation to relate pre-interventional images to intra- interventional images, deformable 2D-3D registration having only a single view in order to compensate for non-rigid motion, catheter tracking for breathing motion compensation, and finally robust 2D-to-3D back-projection of tracked instruments.

Bio: Martin Groher has received the diploma in Informatics at the Technische Universität München in December 2003. Thereafter, he did his PhD at the newly founded Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures. After a short visit at Siemens Corporate Research in Princeton he focused on angiographic imaging and developed different methods for vessel extraction and interpretation. Through his close collaboration with Siemens Healthcare and the radiology departments of several Munich hospitals he could conceive efficient and clinically suitable solutions for the registration and visualization of vascular images. In the four years of his dissertation Groher has published 15 articles in conferences and journals, is reviewer for the most prestigious international conferences and journals (MICCAI, IEEE TMI, MedIA) and has submitted a patent to the German patent office. In 2008 he organized a workshop for "Image Guidance and Computer Assistance for Soft-Tissue Interventions: Technology and Applications" at MICCAI in London. Martin Groher is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures at the Technische Universität München.





Variational Deformable Registration Beyond L2:
Overview over Approaches for Deformable Registration in Sobolev Spaces (11:00-12:00)

Abstract: Variational methods are a popular class of techniques for deformable registration of medical images. They offer a simple way of modeling the problem by defining an energy consisting of a similarity measure and a regularization term. This energy is then optimized by suitable numerical methods. Over the last years, a lot of work has been dedicated to formulation of similarity measures and regularization terms, and development of efficient optimization methods. However, with only a few exceptions, most approaches have in common that they treat the deformable registration problem in the standard L2 space.
In this talk we review existing alternatives to this approach, which employ Sobolev spaces instead of L2. This results in an elegant and simple framework, in which explicit regularization is not necessary, as Sobolev spaces already inherently operate on a class of functions with certain regularity properties. Connections of this class of approaches to some standard optimization techniques are also discussed.

Bio: Darko Zikic is a senior PhD student at the Computer Aided Medical Procedures (CAMP) group of Prof. Nassir Navab, at the Technische Universität München.
His main line of work are methods for intensity-based deformable registration, with focus on variational approaches and corresponding optimization methods.
Darko is organizing and will be lecturing at a tutorial on intensity-based deformable registration at MICCAI 2010, in Beijing, China.
